With the coldest, rainiest winter we’ve had in the past few years, an upcoming (gasp!) 34th birthday, AND the being in the third trimester of pregnancy, I decided it was time to rethink my beauty routine. While I’ve been blessed with normal albeit sensitive skin—thanks to my Mom and lolas (grandmothers)—I have to admit I haven’t been the most consistent when it comes to my routine. Through much trial and error, I’ve come to a winter beauty regimen I finally feel comfortable with.
Fact: I dislike washing my face. Pretty much all the facial washes and soaps I’ve tried left my skin tight and dry, which is super-uncomfortable for me. I’ve gone through everything from Cetaphil to cleansing lotions, but nothing gave me the fresh but hydrated feeling I wanted. Then I stumbled upon Neutrogena’s cleansing oil. It applies smoothly, without being too greasy, and washes off thoroughly. The result: clean, soft skin. I also like using Kiehl’s alcohol-free toner because it doesn’t strip away any of the moisture I’ve been trying to keep. It does catch any residual makeup or dirt that’s left behind after washing.
About a year ago, I added this Kiehl’s eye cream to my mornings and evenings. I felt it was finally time to admit that I’m closer to mid- than early-thirties, and a little prevention of furrows and lines would go a long way. So far, so good.
My staple that I’ve been using since my 20s has been Olay’s Total Effects moisturizer with SPF 30. Nothing else I’ve tried has kept my skin feeling great all day long.
At night, I go through my cleansing ritual to remove all the makeup and accumulated city grime. Then, I start with Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery serum. It can get a bit pricey, but I bought this bottle about a year and a half ago and there’s still a bit left in it. Two or three drops are enough to cover my face. I especially love this while traveling. If I’m on a very long flight, it’s perfect for keeping your skin refreshed while you sleep.
This winter, since the temperature in our house has to be warm enough for our little one to sleep well, the air has been extremely dry. I purchased Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream for really cold evenings as a nice layer that seems thick but feels really lightweight. On regular nights, Mr. D and I have been using Target’s Up & Up nightly moisturizer. It has the same ingredients as Olay Regenerist, but is about $10 cheaper. We’ve been using this pretty much since we got married, and it’s been working well for both of us.
I love playing with makeup. Even though I’ve managed to pare my everyday makeup down to a 10-minute drill, I love adding a few swipes of bright or dark lipstick as a pick-me-up.
However, nothing makes me happier than the days I choose to go makeup-free. On weekends when we’re not seeing friends or family, I put on my daytime moisturizer and sunblock and go out the door fresh-faced. It’s liberating from a mental and emotional aspect to not constantly be judged for how I look, but also gives my skin a chance to breathe and relax. I’ve found that my skin has been less irritable, less prone to zits. I suggest you try it, even just one day a week, and see how it works for you.
