We kinda always knew we’d end up doing something like this together. What’s funny is just how long (and how far away we had to be from each other) it would take for us to finally decide to start.
We’re four years and personalities apart, but the things that inspire and excite us are eerily similar. We’re obsessed with design on all fronts: home, graphic, fashion … we love it all. Growing up around our dad’s family’s furniture business, and learned through osmosis the difference between a Queen Anne chair and a Chippendale one. Our mom was always stylish and fashion savvy, and knew how to put things together with panache—without breaking the bank. You could say we grew up on design. We loved it enough to spend four years in a place with sub-zero temperatures and tons of snow learning about it, and another decade or so practicing it.
While we haven’t lived in the same city since we left our alma mater, we’ve always managed to share our ideas and the things we love. Becoming mothers has drawn us even closer. After all, who best to ask about all the strange and funny things that happen when you’re a new mom? After emailing, texting, and Facebook Messaging articles, photos, book recommendations, and cries for help, a blog seemed a natural next step.
WHAT IS THE MID-WEST?
After college, Carissa moved to Los Angeles to be with her husband, while Melissa moved to The Big Apple. Then, a few years later, Carissa announced that she was pregnant. Wanting to be closer to her big sis and new niece, Melissa asked to be transferred to her company’s headquarters in San Francisco. It was definitely scary, but the best decision she ever made. In 2010, we had toyed with LA Life/SF Style as a possible name for a blog. However, work and growing families continued to vie for our attention and time, and the idea never got its start.
Last year, Carissa and her husband decided to make the move to Texas to pursue new opportunities and a different lifestyle for themselves and their children. While sitting on our respective couches texting each other, we came up with Mid-West Muse. “Mid” for Texas and “West” for California, both still inspired by a single muse.
We hope this is a space that will inspire and inform, that celebrates the beauty in the simple and the high-brow, and that our honest and authentic points of view will make you come back often.
